Below is the soft copy of my farewell speech on tech issues.
Good evening everyone. Carry forward the legacy left by one of our seniors, I am going to narrate a short story.
There was a boy, by name OMI, who came to IIIT without having any background in computers. He used to spend all this time in workspace exploring Linux usually at the cost of missing his lectures and even meals. Inspired by the works done by Nirnimesh, SMR etc., over a period of two years, after struggling, only as he could have done, he climbed onto the post which he always wanted, the sysadmin of IIIT.

As I said in my previous post, I was asked to visit Rediff Office in Mumbai. I thought Wednesday (25th) would be a great idea. Informed the same to HR. I got the return ticket to Mumbai on Tuesday. This was the first time I was going to Mumbai and also the first time I was boarding a flight. Both flights were Indian Airlines.

A few days back I got a call from an alumnus about a job opening at Rediff in my domain (server side craziness
). Initially I was a bit surprised because I was not expecting something like that at all. After discussing a bit more about it, I returned to my room and forwarded the resume. Two days later while I was in RnD Showcase, I got a call from Rediff regarding the interview timings. It was scheduled on Saturday 21st at 1PM.

The feeling that B.Tech. is almost over forces me to feel a bit nervous. I spend (I am not sure whether to call it wastage) a lot of time socializing (at coffee shop and in BC with friends) and rest of the time I am sitting in front of my computer screen trying to develop or explore something. My life at IIIT has been influenced by a lot of factors from Dr. Kamal’s use of a tablet pc and wifi to connect to the projector for a lecture or Dr. Sangal’s outstanding way of teaching or the limited bandwidth forcing me to think of alternatives or Nirnimesh’s inclination towards Linux or Ranta’s entrepreneurial skills or Sandeep Saini’s dedication towards downloading. You have so many people around you with exceptional skills in their fields. All these have forced me rethink about myself in one or the other way.

We just received a mail from IIIT-H help desk stating
New year special proxy server has been created for all users as gift from
IIIT Server Room staff. There are no moderations done on that proxy so all
websites are accessible. Even better there is no connection limit per IP
or per user on the new proxy.
Proxy is accessible at IP _SNIP_ on port _SNIP_. Please feel free to
download as much as you want from this new proxy server.

I still remember when I launched saini.co.in in November last year. That was my first website that I owned and I came to know about things like hosting, domains and related things. This year, I am proudly launching cachevideos.com, which will act as an official website for my (now) popular squid plugin youtube cache. The website is drupal based and all I have done is populated the content, modified some CSS, installed some modules, themes etc. It took almost 1-2 days for building that website. Drupal is a real cool CMS if you want to build sites quickly. Will write a post about how I build that site sometime. A big thanks to Sambhav Jain for customizing the header image for the website using photoshop. And train loadz of thanks to SMR for providing fu**ing awesome hosting service at g33k.in. Will write a review about the hosting sometime soon.

Finally the exams are over for the 20th time ever since I joined IIIT. 20 times in just 3 years is a bit too much of evaluation and still there is not even single person in my batch who can really be evaluated based on his/her scores in these so called exams. More than 80% of janta spend 6-7hours per course per semester other than attending classes which anyway doesn’t count. And a BIG THANKS to the 20% of janta for studying damn seriously and teaching creatures like me

Yesterday, a team for five (four people from administration and me) visited Dr. Reddy’s Labs in Hyderabad for a live demo of two security products Linkproof and DefensePro from Radware. DefensePro is a firewall kind of thing (for lay man) which protects your critical servers and Intranet from internal as well as external attacks. Linkproof is a load balancer for outbound as well as inbound traffic in case of multiple (<= 3) ISPs. Linkproof also manages traffic in case one of the ISP fails.

We had three days with totally fluctuating internet. The fluctuation was almost like a sine wave. Nobody could really figure out what went wrong and where the problem was.
NOTE : This post is not just another ‘masalla’ post. I am writing down the actual experience I had.
